I designed the “OnBox Shop” TV application introducing a new medium for purchasing TiVo products and services directly through the TiVo set-top-box. The app’s performance affirmed the TiVo DVR to be an acceptable medium for promoting and selling big ticket TiVo products, measured from direct sales through the app and driving sales to the web

I created a solution requiring minimal data entry, promotes product comparison, and reduced the number of screens required to complete the task. I delivered the Process Flow, Wireframes, Specifications, and worked closely with product managers and engineering to monitor implementation.

Role

Process Flow

Designing for the 10-foot experience and remote control input requires a focus on delivering key information to help customers make informed decisions and limiting data entry.

The process flow depicts the steps required to complete a purchase through the OnBox Shop. Utilizing the established TiVo design guidelines would result in a 29 step process. By employing strategies to reduce the number of screens, such as branching off extraneous information and introducing a new interaction model, a purchase can be completed in as few as 14 steps while maintaining the TiVo spirit.

The TiVo design language at this time relied on static screens with a linear interaction model, where selecting an item would navigate to the details of that item. This design required users to bounce back and forth between the list of options and details for each option, making it difficult to compare products and adding unnecessary steps to complete the purchase.

By introducing a rollover-state on the options list, the details of each option display directly on the same screen when an option is highlighted. This allows for easier product comparison and eliminates the need for a separate details screen. While this approach sounds simple, it broke out of traditional TiVo conventions and introduced a new interaction model that is easily adaptible into the TiVo framework and doesn’t alienate existing TiVo users.

The flexible framework also permitted the app to be launched several times for promoting new product offerings requiring little to no UI changes.

The design simplifies data entry by focusing on tasks that require numeric data since these keys are readily available on the remote control.

Another strategy for simplifying data entry is to leverage existing customer account information that customers are asked to verify.
